Hopes & Dreams
The vision of wit & whimsy came over 20 years ago, while I was working for a brand new, big name card store in Mentor. It was then I realized I wanted to open my own shop. I loved being part the customers’ shopping experience; from ordering product, setting up displays, and providing advice. And having been born and raised in Madison, I knew there was no better place.
Fast forward to August of 2013.
My life had changed a lot; I went through a divorce and was caring for both my teenage daughter and elderly father. I sat down one day and wrote out three mission statements for my life, one of which ended up being the mission statement for wit & whimsy: To provide Madison and the surrounding communities with a place to purchase unique gift items. I didn’t know what I wanted to sell, just that I didn’t want it to be something you could get at the local shopping mall or big box store.
In November of 2014, I had my inspiration. When I was volunteering for a local nonprofit holding a craft show, my former high school German teacher was there with his wood cutouts of Madison landmarks. He stated he was retiring from doing shows and was just going to sell online. *BOOM* That was it! My shop would feature local artisans!
Writing a business plan was overwhelming and tedious, but due to the motivation from a wonderful and supportive person, I knew the hard work would pay off. Without that encouragement, wit & whimsy would still be in the planning stages of my mind.
July of 2016, when the bright blue door of wit & whimsy opened, my dream became reality.
